All Chest Locations

FF1 Pixel Remaster has 249 treasure chests spread across 18 locations. Nothing is missable -- every dungeon stays open after you first visit, and every chest persists. You can go back for anything you skipped.

The most commonly missed chests are the Mystic Key locked rooms. The key is obtained during the Elfheim chapter. Once you have it, go back to Cornelia Castle, Elven Castle, Western Keep, Chaos Shrine, and Marsh Cave before moving on -- those rooms have some of the best early-midgame gear in the game.

Trophy Thresholds

Trophy Threshold
Treasure Hunter 25 chests opened
Master Treasure Hunter 125 chests opened
Legendary Treasure Hunter All 249 chests opened

The first two come naturally during a normal playthrough. The final one requires going back to locked rooms and combing every dungeon floor carefully. Use the individual location guides below to track what you have and what you're missing.

Mystic Key Locked Chests

The Mystic Key is the most important item for chest hunting. Obtained during the Elfheim chapter after defeating Astos, it unlocks locked doors in five early locations:

  • Cornelia Castle -- all 6 chests are locked (including Nitro Powder, required for story)
  • Elven Castle -- all 4 chests are locked (Mythril Hammer, Bronze Gloves, Gil)
  • Western Keep -- all 3 chests are locked and contain monsters
  • Chaos Shrine -- 3 of 6 chests are locked
  • Marsh Cave -- 3 of 18 chests are locked and contain monsters

Go back and clear all five locations immediately after getting the key. The gear inside -- especially Iron Armor, Power Staff, and Silver Armlet -- is relevant for the next stretch of the game.
