H1: The Sunken Shrine

Chapter stats: 32 Chests | 10 New Enemies | 1 Boss

Enter the Sunken Shrine from the Mermaid dock at the southeast corner of Onrac. You need the Oxyale from Gaia to proceed. Level 35 to 38 is comfortable for the full clear. This is the longest dungeon so far -- five floors, 32 chests, and Kraken at the bottom. Plan to make two separate runs: one to clear the upper floors and grab the Rosetta Stone, and a second to fight Kraken.

H2: Enemy Overview

Thunder magic is the dominant tool in this dungeon. Aquatic enemies (Sahagin Prince, White Shark, Sea Snake, Sea Scorpion, Sea Troll, Deepeyes, Water Naga) are all weak to Thunder -- Thundaga wipes entire groups in one cast. Ghosts, Mummies, and King Mummy take heavy damage from Fire and Dia. Water Elementals and Pyrolisks are weak to Blizzard instead. Cockatrices have no elemental weakness and can petrify.

Water Naga and Ghost are rare spawns -- fight them when they appear for the bestiary.

H2: Upper Floors -- Rosetta Stone Run (3F to 5F)

You enter on 3F. Two chests on this floor: 9,900 Gil in the west room and 2,000 Gil in the southeast. Take the northeast stairs up to 4F.

4F chests: Five rooms branch off a zigzag corridor. Diamond Armor sits in the northern room -- equip it on your Knight, it resists Thunder. Southwest room has Light Axe, which casts Diara as an item and deals bonus damage to undead. Center south holds Mage's Staff (casts Fira as item). 12,350 Gil in the southeast, 1,300 Gil in the C-shaped room near the stairs. Take the east stairs up to 5F.

5F has no random encounters. Work around the full perimeter collecting chests: Diamond Armlet (equip on a mage), 9,000 Gil, 1,760 Gil in the north room; Diamond Shield (Thunder resistant) and an Antidote in the southeast area. The critical room is in the northeast -- take the northwest corridor off-screen left and it wraps around to a room with Diamond Helm, Diamond Gloves, and the Rosetta Stone. Grab all three. The full Diamond set gives your Knight Thunder resistance and a major defense boost.

Once all rooms are clear, head back down to 3F and cast Teleport to exit. Rest at the Onrac Inn and restock before the second run.

H2: Lower Floors -- Kraken Run

Re-enter the Sunken Shrine and take the northwest stairs down from 3F this time. The path winds through connector floors. On 3F's second section, grab 1,110 Gil and 1,450 Gil from the long room, then descend to 2F.

2F chest rooms (4 total):

Southeast room: 7,690 Gil (guarded by Water Elementals) and 8,135 Gil. Southwest room: 5,450 Gil, 1,385 Gil, and the Giant's Gloves (guarded by Mummies, King Mummy, Pyrolisks, and Cockatrices -- Holy and Blizzaga clear them). The Giant's Gloves cast Saber when used as an item; save them for the Kraken fight. Northwest room: a second Light Axe, guarded by sea monsters. Northeast room: a second Ribbon (put it on your Black Wizard), plus 9,900 Gil, 7,340 Gil, and 2,750 Gil.

Head northwest to the stairs down to 1F. No treasure on 1F. Walk north through the large room, follow the path west then north again to the Water Crystal chamber. Heal to full before approaching.

H2: Boss -- Kraken

Boss Stats:

  • HP: 1,800
  • Attack: 8 physical hits per turn, can inflict Blind
  • Weakness: Thunder
  • Resistance: Fire, Ice, Earth

Strategy: Turn one: White Wizard casts Protera. Turn two: White Wizard casts Invisira. Turn three onward: White Wizard casts Curaja whenever anyone drops below 100 HP. Use the Giant's Gloves to cast Saber on your Knight, then Haste your strongest physical attacker. Black Wizard casts Thundaga every single turn -- nothing else. His 8-hit combo hurts even with buffs up, but Protera and Invisira make it survivable. Blind landing on your attackers slows physical damage but does not affect Thundaga. Kraken falls in 5 to 7 rounds.

Rewards: Water Crystal restored, 4,245 EXP, 5,000 Gil

After the fight a portal appears to warp you out of the Sunken Shrine.

H2: After the Sunken Shrine

Fly to Melmond and find Dr. Unne near the gravestones in the northeast of town. Show him the Rosetta Stone and he teaches your party the Lufenian language. You will need it to communicate in Lufenia, the ancient city that holds the Chime required to enter the Mirage Tower.
