Vampire -- Boss #5
The Vampire guards the Star Ruby on B3 of the Cavern of Earth, disguised as a bat blocking the path forward. Interact with him and he reveals his true form. He is undead and weak to Fire and Dia-two or three rounds of focused magic ends this fight quickly. The Star Ruby you earn is needed to pass through Giant's Cave and reach the sage Sarda.

Strategy
Undead enemies take roughly double damage from Fire and Dia spells. With only 280 HP, Firaga from your Black Mage and Diaga from your White Mage will end this in 2 to 3 rounds. Black Mage: Firaga every turn. Even Fira works well if you do not have Level 5 spells yet. White Mage: Alternate between Diaga and Curaga. Use Diaga when the party is healthy, Curaga when anyone drops below 80 HP. The Vampire's 76 Attack can two-shot a caster who gets ignored. Physical attackers: Attack every turn while your mages exploit the weaknesses. Haste on your Warrior speeds things up but is not required for this fight. Physical damage is fine as filler but your mages do the real work here. Do not waste the early rounds on buffs-Firaga and Diaga alone are enough to end this quickly.
Quick Tips
- • Fire and Dia hit for roughly double damage. Even lower-level versions like Fira and Diara are effective.
- • Do not neglect healing. The Vampire's 76 Attack hits hard-a caster left at low HP while you focus on offense will go down fast.
- • No status effects will land on this fight. Skip Sleep and other utility spells entirely.
Turn-by-Turn Guide
- 1. Black Mage casts Firaga every turn
- 2. White Mage alternates Diaga and Curaga
- 3. Physical attackers attack each turn
- 4. Use Diaga when party is healthy
- 5. Switch to Curaga when HP < 80
- 6. Continue Fire and Dia spam
- 7. Vampire falls in 2-3 rounds
Rewards
The Star Ruby drops from a chest behind the Vampire after the fight. Exit the Cavern of Earth and head north then immediately west to Giant's Cave. A titan blocks the passage inside-hand over the Star Ruby and he steps aside. Four treasure chests are on the other side, including a Mythril Helm and a Great Axe. Continue through the back of Giant's Cave to Sage's Cave. Sarda gives you the Earth Rod, which breaks through the sealed door on B3 of the Cavern of Earth leading to the deeper floors. Rest at the Melmond Inn and restock before heading back inside. Lich waits on B5-a significantly harder fight requiring level 20 to 22.
