H1: Cavern of Ice and the Airship

Chapter stats: 15 Chests | 8 New Enemies | 1 Boss

Sail north from Crescent Lake into the bay and dock at the port. Take the Canoe west along the river, then follow the forks north until you reach land. Walk to the Cavern of Ice entrance. Level 28 to 30 is comfortable for the full clear.


H2: Cavern of Ice -- What to Know Before Entering

Two hazards define this dungeon. Cracked floor tiles collapse when you step on them and drop you to the floor below -- some falls are required to reach certain chests and the Levistone itself. Spiky ice patches deal 1 HP per step to your entire party. Move quickly through them and avoid backtracking.

There is no way to heal inside the dungeon. Rest at Crescent Lake before entering and carry Tents for MP recovery between floors.

Enemy notes:

  • Mindflayers can instant-kill any party member with no save. Kill them first every fight or run. They have no elemental weakness -- physical damage and Haste are your best tools
  • Undead enemies (Specters, Wraiths, Mummies, Wights, Bloodbones, Ghasts) all take heavy damage from Fire and Dia
  • Ice types (White Dragons, Winter Wolves, Ice Gigas) are weak to Fire. White Dragons also take extra damage from Thunder
  • Dark Wizards have no elemental weakness and cast Death. Kill them fast
  • Cockatrices still petrify -- keep Gold Needles stocked

H2: Cavern of Ice Floor Directions

B1: No treasure on this floor. Follow the path east to the stairs down.

B2 (first pass): Head southwest and take the stairs down to B3. No chests yet. The B3 stairs bring you back up to a different section of B2 where the main chest room sits.

B2 (Levistone section): Two chests in the guarded room -- Flame Sword on the left (approach from behind), Clothes on the right (guarded by 4 Dark Wizards). Equip the Flame Sword on your Warrior, it is a meaningful fire damage upgrade. After grabbing both chests, step on a crack to drop down to B3.

B3: Undead ambush immediately at the bottom. Dia or Firaga clears them. Head west across the spiky ice into the northwest room -- Mythril Gloves on the left, Ice Armor on the right (guarded by 2 White Dragons). Equip the Ice Armor on your Warrior. Walk south across the full length of the floor to a room with 6 Gil chests totaling over 41,000 Gil. Two are guarded. Take the stairs on the east side back up to B1.

B1 (second section): Ether in a chest just south of the stairs. A small room nearby holds 10,000 Gil. Head north, go right, then south into a long room with 3 chests -- 9,500 Gil, a Sleeping Bag, and the Ice Shield. Equip the Ice Shield on your Warrior for ice resistance. Then fall through the crack in that room to land back in B2 near the Levistone.

B2 (Levistone): Avoid every crack this time. Walk carefully to the Levistone chest and take it.


H2: Boss -- Evil Eye

The Evil Eye guards the Levistone chest. It activates as you approach.

Boss Stats:

  • HP: 162
  • Attack: Three instant-kill spells -- Death, Glare, and Rub
  • Weakness: None

Strategy: Skip all defensive buffs -- there is no time for them. Have every party member attack or cast an offensive spell on turn one. Haste your Warrior if you have it memorized. Your Black Mage uses Thundaga or Firaga. The fight ends in 1 to 2 rounds if you go all out. Any round where the Evil Eye acts freely risks an instant-kill landing on a key party member. End the fight before that happens.

Rewards: 3,225 EXP, 3,225 Gil, plus the Levistone from the chest

H2: Exiting the Cave

After grabbing the Levistone, fall through a nearby crack to land back on B3. Fight through the undead again and retrace the B3 path east to the stairs. Back on B1, head north past the long chest room and take the stairs in the northeast corner of that section to exit the dungeon.


H2: Raising the Airship

Return to Crescent Lake and rest at the Inn. Take the Canoe west but head south this time, following the river until you reach land. Walk into the small desert south of Crescent Lake. The Levistone raises the Airship from beneath the sand.

You can now fly anywhere on the world map. The next stop is the Citadel of Trials to the southwest, where your entire party upgrades to advanced classes. Stock up on healing items and Gold Needles before flying there.
